For those ridin’ dirty

Or just for kids that aren’t so legal yet, or drivers in general: check out Trapster, an application for the iPhone plus other devices.  It alerts you to upcoming speed traps and police hiding spots as you drive.  Maybe it could help with ride planning if we check our routes against it.  I can’t really imagine how easy it would be to listen to aural trap reports while riding a moped, but maybe with headphones.

Anyway, it’s free.  I downloaded it today, I’ll comment back when I’ve tried it out more.

Stock vs. Kitted

Oct 02 at 5:38 pm
Category: Project, Rally     Posted by Erin Seale

I took a chance in San Francisco because my Motron wasn’t ready to ride… I used the 50cc Concord Shadow, with a top speed of around 37mph, stock pipe and everything.  I swapped the 14/12 carb for the drilled out 14.27 from my Baretta and crossed my fingers that I wasn’t going to get stranded – California rallies are usually crazy fast, almost everyone has a kitted bike.

After that went reasonably well, I decided to do more to build up my stock bikes.  They really aren’t so slow as to be left behind or even be embarrassing.  Sometimes I would catch myself passing up a bike I knew to be kitted, and I passed people in corners all over the place, usually only to have them pertly cruise by again as soon as they got their comfortable straight stretch back.

I love going fast, but there’s something about driving a stock slower bike that brings out the crazy competitive road-rage filled cursing-like-a-sailor moped racer in me that is fun as hell.  I hardly remembered what it was like to round a corner up a hill as fast as possible, trying to keep up speed.

I think this winter will probably be seeing me in the garage with a dremel and a variety of Minarelli cylinders.  So get ready…. Next spring : 50cchallenge!  Stock (vintage) bottom end, stock cylinder (no 50cc kits) and you can do what you want with your carb and pipe.

Oaks Park’s Oktoberfest Sunday 9/21

Category: Calendar     Tags: , , , ,     Posted by oFace

Mopeders and scooterists have been invited back this year for a show & shine during Oaks Amusement Park’s Oktoberfest. Come join us for great German music, food, beer, and of course free rides and serious bumper car action on Sunday September 21st.

Anyone who arrives on a moped, scooter, or motorcycle (passengers included) will receive a free bracelet that covers your Oktoberfest gate entry, all of the rides (except for go-karts), and roller skating.

When you arrive at the park, ride around to the far right side behind the skating rink building. They will let you in and give you a bracelet there. There is a designated parking area and OSC display table (same place as last year, ask park staff for directions if you need to).

Families who arrive in a separate vehicle will need to pay for admission: $2 for 15 & younger, $5 for 16+, $3 for 62+. Ride bracelets are $14.25 for deluxe, $11.50 for limited.
